This VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Make-Up Artistry is delivered by Debut Training Academy and is aimed at learners who wish to pursue a career as an employed and/or self-employed make-up artist, providing a range of make-up services in applying make-up, instruction on make-up, fashion and photographic make-up, media make-up, camouflage make-up, airbrush make-up and promoting products and services in the industry.

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification but in order to optimise their chances of success, a learner will ideally hold a Level 2 qualification or equivalent in hairdressing or beauty therapy.

This qualification will prepare you for employment as a make-up artist.   You will develop your knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology, health and safety, client care and cosmetic products and equipment. You will also develop a range of technical skills enabling you to prepare the skin and apply a variety of make-up products using different techniques. You will also develop interpersonal skills, which will assist you to communicate effectively with clients.

What could this qualification lead to? 

This qualification will prepare you for employment as a make-up artist.  You will also be eligible to join a professional association and gain insurance as a make-up artist.

Course content

This unit is about design and application of face and body art.  The knowledge and practical skills achieved in this unit includes research and design and may include manual and airbrush techniques.

This unit is about providing instruction and giving advise to clients from a variety of age groups for a range of purposes.  This advise includes correct use of tools, equipment and application of products.

This unit is about providing make-up for a variety of occasions, including day, evening and special occasions.  You will work on a variety of skin types, tones and age groups using a range of make-up products.

This unit is about special effects and media make-up.  You will learn to create casualty effects and character looks, using the application of small prosthetics.  Consultation and design briefing, including the use of mood boards, are key elements of this unit.

This unit is about designing and applying fashion and photographic make-up and includes incorporating current fashion trends, historical/period and special occasion make-up.  You will also learn about make-up for both colour and black and white photography.

This unit is providing skin camouflage applications to cover a wide range of often complex conditions, designed to restore the skin colouration of the surrounding skin tone.  It also covers the use of a variety of specialist camouflage products.

This unit provides you with the knowledge and understanding to use the airbrush equipment and products to design an airbrush application.

This unit prepares you for work based on your capability and knowledge.  You will develop your ability to adapt the provision of client care and communication skills to meet the needs and expectations of your clients. 

This unit develops your skills in a supervisory role enabling you to recognise hazards, carry out risk assessments, monitor and support your colleagues and implement and supervise salon procedures for all aspects of safety and security including the need for insurance. 

You will learn to promote products and services by providing accurate information, describing benefits and features to your clients, identifying buying signals and securing an agreement and closing a sale.
