I began working in Makeup when I was 19, on a Makeup counter in London’s, Oxford Street. It was a part time position because I was studying Media Production at Surrey University. Sadly when I graduated in 2008, the country was in a recession and I was not successful in finding employment in the Media industry. I was then offered a promotion to become an Assistant Manager in John Lewis, Oxford Street. A year later I was promoted to an Account Manager in Boots Sedley Place (Bond Street). I loved my career in Retail Makeup. In 2020 I officially began freelancing after having my children.
I enrolled at Debut Academy in September 2021 and completed their VTCT Level 3 Makeup Artistry qualification. Even though I had over ten years of experience I still wanted to learn more and officially become a Pro Makeup Artist. I thoroughly enjoyed the course at Debut and learned so much. Unfortunately the specification of the course lacked specific focus on black and ethnic groups. I was the only black student on the course, which was great for the other students to practice on me so they could explore my skin and complexion type. This also shows the lack of diversity within the qualifications, not just for make-up but for other qualifications created and delivered to training academy’s and colleges. I will work with Debut Training Academy Limited to go straight to the awarding bodies and ensure all modern qualifications are updated with more diverse information for learners of the future to gain the powerful knowledge and information required to work on ALL skin types and complexions with confidence.
My aim for 2023 is to host masterclasses on different complexions. It’s a huge area in make-up that desperately requires improvement.
Since completing my VTCT Level 3 in Makeup Artistry, my freelance business has thrived. I am currently an ambassador for MUA Cosmetics (exclusive to Superdrug) and am currently posted in over 600 stores in the UK.”
